River Genil Bird Observatory in Cuevas de San Marcos

Action funded by the Competitiveness Tourism Plan of Sierra Norte of Malaga in order to revalue the river Genil, by conditioning several observation points around for studying and learning local wildlife (among them, migratory birds).

The observatory is located on the north bank of the river Genil by a wooden hut, both outside and inside, with wooden beams and covered in heather material to reduce environmental impact.

The abundance of water and dense vegetation cover that protects the river are home to many birds : Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Common Sandpiper ( Actitis hypoleucos), Grey Heron (Ardea sinerea), Azure-Winged Magpie (Iberian Magpie), Common Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos), Cetti's Warbler (Cettia cetti), Western Olivaceous Warbler (Hippolais opaca), among others.
