How it lives

Species resident in the province of Malaga although very localized. It breeds from March and makes two layings of 4 to 6 eggs. Nest in cracks of rocks, bridges, slopes and riverbanks. It feeds on aquatic insects. The White-Throated Dipper is a specialist in the capture of larvae of dragonflies, stoneflies, aquatic beetles and caddisflies (larvae of trichoptera). It captures its prey by swimming and even diving, turning over stones from the riverbed, and makes small and frequent dives in the water of a few seconds.

Where it can be seen in Malaga

It is a scarce bird in the province. It is present in the Genal, Guadaiza, Guadalmina, Guadalmansa and Guadiaro rivers. In the Great Path it can be watched in stages 23, 24, 25 and 27.

Curious facts

White-throated dippers usually perch on stones in the middle of the water, arching the body regularly, and from there they dive and go back out. Their demand for very clean water makes them bioindicators of rivers and streams in a good state of conservation and with very clean waters.
